The amazing thing about new technology is that every year it keeps getting smaller and cheaper. The fact that you can take advantage of the exact same top-tier iPad point of sale technology used by full-service restaurants – while working inside your little food truck or snack bar is a true modern marvel.
The food truck industry can be fickle and merciless to newcomers. Give yourself, your family, and your wallet a break, and invest in a good POS system right off the bat. Being able to accurately track information and accept differing forms of payment will give you a leg-up on a huge percentage of the competition. I’ve mentioned four of the best POS systems for food trucks, but there are many more. If you’ve used a great POS or mobile payment processor in your food truck, please tell me all about in the comments section. Now get out there, start cooking, and make some money!

This thing works awesome, and there are tons of other reviews, so read those for more info. Only problem we have had is the stand has a hard time connecting to chip reader occasionally. When you open the program for the first time, there is like a 10% chance it won’t connect to chip reader. You have to quit app and restart. Gets old.

Unfortunately, cooking skill and prime location do not a successful food truck make. Not automatically, at least. True success also requires a fair amount of business acumen. Making money in this industry is just like making money in any other industry – you’ve got to keep careful records, study trends, and spend less than you make. There is a reason why 80% of restaurants fail within five years of opening. Take a look at any one of the current restaurant-related reality TV shows. What do you see? Lots of good people and excellent chefs defaulting on loans, losing their homes and livelihoods because they don’t have a clue how to run a successful business. Depressing, isn’t it? If you want to avoid that fate – if you don’t fancy being screamed at by your CPA or the IRS or (if you’re really unlucky) Gordon Ramsay – then pay careful attention to what I’m about to say: You need a point-of-sale (POS) system.
You can have peace of mind knowing that your tablet is secure, because this enclosure locks with a key that only the owner possesses, and is made from high-grade metal, the stand and face plate are built to last, even under heavy and frequent use. Does your food truck or produce stand only accept cash payments? If this limited form of payment is starting to hurt your business, then it may be time you made the switch to a mobile point of sale system. This growing method of payment utilizes smart phone and tablet technology to accept and process credit and debit cards. Besides their convenience, mobile point of sale systems can be easily modified to suit your preferences. Most of the programs available for mobile POS can even be used to track sales trends in your coffee shop, cafe, or bakery, so you can find out when your peak times of business are, as well as product performance.
Sometimes concessions need to branch out from the stand. Using hand-held mobile devices like the Clover™ Flex or Clover™ Mobile, you can bring all the versatility and robustness of Clover™ right into the stands.

There’s a small design flaw that puts the screw that holds the cover in place directly in the path of the charging cord for the iPad. This means you have to bend the iPad charging cord to ensure the screw does not puncture it when attaching the face cover. Also, for maintenance purposes, you need to ensure you don’t lose the tool to remove the screw, where a key lock may have been easier to deal with.
Using a cellular data connection, the best mobile POS system keeps your payments processing, and your data backed up. And even when you are off the grid and have “zero bars” it just keeps on going! In general, pin-connector swipers have proven to be more reliable and secure than audio-jack swipers. Particularly if you run a business that has high traffic and need a reliable tool to help you handle credit card orders, you will likely want to purchase a point of sale system that uses a pin-connector card reader.
Because Square is so simple – usually installed on a pad or mobile phone – it’s possible (and financially feasible) to get an app for every person who works for you. That way, they can move around freely, interacting with customers, taking orders, and making the wait for food much shorter. As Square puts it, your employees “can each be their own point of sale.” Square works fine without any additional hardware, but if you’d like to accept cash or print receipts, it is a simple matter to just buy a cash drawer or a small printer. Square is not for everyone. It works best for food truckers who are just starting out or who have minimal sales. Large-volume trucks need more robust inventory trackers and might find the Square’s reporting tools a bit insipid.
It starts by choosing iPad vs. Android for your POS tablet. iPads reduce the need for user s to be tech savvy because it just works. Every manufacturer of Android puts it’s own “flavor” on their tablets, so who knows what you’re getting and if it will even be compatible with your POS hardware. Android is a mix and match, and that’s the last thing you want to get into when your business is depending on it. Sure, you can use a rock as a hammer, but wouldn’t you rather just go buy a hammer? The most reliable food truck POS will leverage iPad hardware and software reliability to keep you going!
