Edit to say that the network issues I mentioned were tied to the wireless router we were using. Replaced that piece and the printer started working great. I still recommend purchasing as a package for better price and customer service, but not a bad piece of equipment.
Plan term and select coverage begins date of purchase and is inclusive of the manufacturer’s warranty. All other coverage begins after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. Plan is fully refunded if canceled within 30 days.
*Note: We have had some Sellers complain about the receipts printing over too many pages when they want it to only print on one. The trick is to reduce the scale of the image within your printing options until it fits. (see screenshot)

Atm it’s cheaper for me to use something else other than square, than to change the printer tablet setup. It appears other people have similar issues. Square managment need to grasp the economics here of only catering to a small hardware segment(Star printers) of the market, while marketing themselves as a simple DIY eftpos POS for small businesses, who burn themselves on compatability issues. Hopefully Square can solve this issue.
I am sure that this has been asked and answered, but the search feature on this communities site is not very robust and the information I’ve been able to gather from square/communities is not entirely clear. So I am asking again (maybe).

Square is not interested in using anyone but Star. And their attitude is that they frankly don’t care. I know, I have emails from them about it. If I was to guess, I would bet they have a deal with Star that funds their (insert pizza parties, to silk pockets). But lets be realistic. I mean it has to be something viable, right? The fact that Star uses the same print protocals that Epson uses has no bearing on an Epson receipt printer not working. It goes in the same line as Android devices can’t use bluetooth devices… although that new chip reader is bluetooth. It is a lack of customer service and they need to step up to the plate, or someone is going to come along and take their business away from them.
Be sure the printer and the iPad are connected to the same network. To confirm this or change your Wi-Fi network, go to the iPad’s Settings and tap “Wi-Fi” located in the left sidebar. Then select the network that the router is broadcasting and click “Connect”.
If you are using your iPad or iPhone by itself with the Square app, you will not be able to use a USB Star Micronics Printer. You will need either a Bluetooth Receipt Printer, or Ethernet Receipt Printer. A good reason for going with Ethernet, is that you can have multiple devices print to one printer. If you are using an Android device, you can use either an Ethernet Receipt Printer, or and of the USB Receipt Printer stated above as long as you use the USB OTG(on the go) adapter. Please note, Bluetooth is not currently supported on Android for Square.

I have my own iPad 2 and square stand. I was Looking for compatible hardware and this was excellent. The register and printer work great, I even ordered more papers for the printer so we will use it long term.
This is an impact printer. So it makes a noise when it prints. Why would you want this? You might want it if you are in an area such as a kitchen where thermal paper receipts don’t print as well because of moisture in the area. You would not want this noise around customers. I started off the implementation of Bluetooth printer support by using the same concurrency model used by our WiFi printer code and running Bluetooth printing and printer discovery blocks on a global concurrent queue. I quickly found what appeared to be a non-deterministic bug — sometimes I could print a receipt with no problem, and other times it would fail part way through. What I was in fact encountering was a timer firing and searching for connected printers while the app was in the middle of sending data to a printer. While this behavior was perfectly acceptable in communication for WiFi printers (TCP supports multiple simultaneous connections), it totally broke down in the new communication channel. It became clear that some kind of mutual exclusion was necessary to prevent this kind of collision.
A simple print button on the tablet application would allow us to connect to a local or network printer and print the same form data. Why is this still impossible? Why can we still not utilize our desktop or local printers to print receipt data from the app?

As a bluetooth only device, it is a bit glitchy. If you are wanting to use it with a phone/tablet only as a standalone device, look elsewhere. The miura m010 reader works great for this, though is unfortunately not available on amazon.

The STAR MICRONICS TSP654IIBI is fast and easy to configure. It is Apple MFi certified. It has auto connect and so it will connect to your iPad automatically. If you want to setup your receipt printer fast, this may be one of the best options. There is no serial cable, ethernet cable or USB connection. That seems like a positive benefit. If you move around a lot or you don’t want to mess with cables the STAR MICRONICS TSP654IIBI may be want you want.
Bought this strictly to print receipts with the Amazon Local Register iPad App and card reader, as it is the only receipt printer supported at this time by that platform. (Bought it used via an Amazon re-seller; works perfectly. It was easy to set up on the network using the downloadable Windows software. Once set up, my iPad and the Amazon Local Register app found the printer and linked to it easily. I haven’t tried using any of the other options (like printing our logo or printing coupons), but for what I bought it for it works perfectly. It prints extremely fast and clearly. The cutter works well, too. It is nice that it can be mounted to a vertical surface if desired.
