Square includes a paid option to add individual employees, for $5 per employee per month. Employee accounts with Square are protected with individual passcodes, and different permissions can be given to each account. Reports can be run by employee, including calculating tips per employee and revenue per labor hour. Square employee management also includes an employee time clock, and integrates with Square Payroll (which is an additional $25 per month).

A second thing to keep in mind is the Square Stand is not exclusively compatible with USB hardware; it’s also compatible with all of the same wireless hardware as Square with a reader. If you’re interested in using the Square Stand and also want wireless hardware, either to future-proof your business or for more mobility, that’s an option you can consider (although the Square Stand may be a bit excessive, see below for other stand options). This also means you can add on wireless hardware to your Square Stand in addition to your USB hardware, like an Ethernet kitchen printer or Bluetooth barcode scanner.

Before connecting your Bluetooth receipt printer to your iPad, ensure the battery is charged and the device is connected to an AC outlet, receipt paper is loaded, and the printer has been turned on. For further information on the initial setup of the printer, refer to the corresponding manufacturer’s manual: Star Micronics SM-S220i and Star Micronics SM-T300i.

iPad-based POS (Point of Sale) systems have become increasingly popular. In addition to saving money on upfront costs, these systems have streamlined operations in the modern merchant and Square Register is quickly becoming one of the most convenient and coolest ways for small businesses to process transactions. Tablet and smartphone based systems are also being increasingly used for inventory control – from the retail floor to the warehouse – and by sales personnel assisting customers in-store and on the convention floor. The hardware options for Square Stand differ from those below. For Square Stand hardware options, or to learn how to set up hardware with Square Stand, click here: here.

The ultimate POS stand for iPad and iPad Mini, built with feedback from existing retail and hospitality customers. The Swivel POS Stand lifts (77mm) and angles your iPad at the ideal height and pitch, and optionally rotates smoothly 180 degrees for screen sharing with customers. We recommend a bolted/screwed installation but a strong 3M adhesive can be used instead. A built-in Kensington locking port gives you the option to secure your iPad.

With a modest print speed of 75mm per second, this handheld wireless printer is perfect for mobile businesses, tradeshows, markets, and events or businesses with light printing needs who want a small printer. The mobile printer utilizes an LCD display for battery life and print error messages. The SM- T300i includes the rechargeable battery pack, AC charging cable, sample paper roll and a setup sheet.

One of the most advertised aspects of each of these POS systems is that they can be mobile, allowing merchants or their staff to do business on the go or just from different locations in their spaces.

After trying to determine what thermal receipt labels to use in my new Star Micronics, SM-T300I-DB50 BlueTooth printer. I finally found a reference on the web to Star Micronics TRF-80T3 Thermal Paper. Not sure why Star Micronics makes this so difficult to determine, even the current version of the manual doesn’t mention this. These rolls fit perfectly inside the the SM-T300I printer, and each roll is 50mm (1.97in) OD. Roll is 80mm W x 29m L (3.15 in x 95 ft) Includes 25 ROLL. So each roll is yielding about 190 to 260 receipts per roll, or less than 0.01 per printed receipt.

The price on these is as competitive as anywhere else. They perform as expected. As is the case with other sources of thermal paper, there always seems to be a lot of paper left on the roll when they are “finished!”

Generally speaking, the Star printers will just show TSP100 on the front of the actual printer but those are the model numbers; it is kind of confusing. Feel free to share a link or two to the printers you’re viewing, I’d be happy to confirm.

To set up a Square account, there is an online form to fill out on their website. Square does not require credit check to set up an account, and there’s no contract or subscription required (although Square does offer a separate subscription-based app, Square for Retail).

PayPal Here allows for up to 1,000 users per account with a Business PayPal account. Each user account has its own login and individual permissions. You can track sales and run reports by individual user account. Other than reporting though, there aren’t any specific employee features, such as an employee time clock or payroll options. PayPal does integrate with certain third-party apps that include features like payroll, but there aren’t any employee management features native to PayPal.

In just about any retail setup, you will require a barcode scanner so you can scan items to ring them up. The scanner typically pairs with a label printer, which, though not technically a piece of “POS hardware,” is still essential to your POS, as are any additional scanners you may need to use for inventory purposes.

Square is priced at 2.75% per card swipe (and 3.5% + 15 cents per manually entered transaction), which is comparable to similar point of sale apps, like PayPal Here. See Square’s website for more details.

@usascottwright – While we don’t currently support Epson printers, it’s definitely a popular feature request. I’ll update this thread if that changes in the future! Also, apologies for the delay in following up with you.

If you’re rewards information’s is taken at the register, when you go to register the plan, it uses your rewards numbers and then autofills all of the information, “automagically” registering it. You still need to go to the website though.

An update 11/21/15 Had it working fine with Amazon local register until Amazon shut it down, so bought the PayPal chip and card reader- the updated paypal iOs app will not print to this printer. (iOs 9.1/ iPad 3). The workaround I found was to turn this printer in to an airprint printer- it’s a bit of a hack, instructions are out there, problem being you must have a host computer on the network. To be clear- this is a PayPal issue- not a fault of the printer.

But my point is that an adding machine paper-receipt looks unprofessional in some businesses.  An inexpensive ink jet or better, a multitasking network office printer that is already in use would make a LOT more sense for me.  I’m sure they are robust and work fine, they just don’t suit my business and I don’t like being so limited in the TYPE of printer I can use.

Ideally, your card reader will be EMV-compliant, meaning it accepts chip-card payments, and will accept contactless NFC payments (mobile payments) as well. Many credit card terminals also print receipts.
