Any article weighing either Square or PayPal Here would be remiss to not mention the negative reviews on both sides. Both have received reports of freezing accounts or funds without warning and inconsistent customer service, and PayPal Here has received many reports of holding funds over $500. Getting Square phone support requires a case number, and in order to get a case number, you must have an active account (which becomes a problem if your account is deactivated). PayPal Here has more easily accessible phone support, but also users report that customer support was unable to resolve their issues. While we don’t believe that these reviews are enough to dissuade you from using either, they are something to keep in mind when making a decision.

These tags must exactly match the tags you added when you set up your products. You can check these by logging in to the Vend web-app, and clicking the products tab. You can then either look at individual products, or use the ‘tags’ tab to see what you’ve already got set up. If you want to know more about setting up tags on products, read this article .

The Ethernet printers compatible with Square Register are thermal printers. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal receipt paper. These types of printers aren’t ideal for kitchens or high-temperature working areas.

If you are using your iPad or iPhone by itself with the Square app, you will not be able to use a USB Star Micronics Printer. You will need either a Bluetooth Receipt Printer, or Ethernet Receipt Printer. A good reason for going with Ethernet, is that you can have multiple devices print to one printer. If you are using an Android device, you can use either an Ethernet Receipt Printer, or and of the USB Receipt Printer stated above as long as you use the USB OTG(on the go) adapter. Please note, Bluetooth is not currently supported on Android for Square.

This type of system can be so helpful to small businesses, but they can be difficult to understand. For this reason, I greatly appreciate your step by step instructions and straight-forward information. One thing that I have hear about is that there are modification that can be made to make a system perfect for your specific business. Do you have any tips about how I could do this?

With the Square Stand system, you can use either a cash drawer that plugs into the receipt printer, or one that plugs into the USB block of the Square Stand. Choose the method that suits your business best – but we typically recommend using the receipt printer connection, since this is simpler and far less expensive than the USB version. Note that all cash drawers listed below have special money trays configured for Canadian currency.

This printer is terrible. It always has connectivity issues and it is constantly jamming. Worst mistake i made for my business. We have to keep it off until we get a customer otherwise it keeps printing no host receipts and it jams. Called star micronics they said it was probably an issue on my end. WRONG! MY other register, which is hooked up by same switch board, has an Epson printer and it gives no issues. Do not buy this printer for your business. Go with an Epson. Same amount of $, no problems.

I am new to Square. I would like to print receipts from my iPad, but the printers on the Square web site cost over $300. I found that I could print a receipt from the web-based customer portal if I am using my PC or Mac. However, the receipt prints on two pages since there is a small icon at the bottom that carries over to the second page. I will have to carefully set the printer to print just one page every time I print a receipt for our event.

I know this because I actually used Square today to buy myself and Dorsey coffee at Sightglass, which is already using the payment system. I made the purchase at 8:47 this morning and the receipt was immediately emailed to me in the form of a link to a Square page. On this page is a receipt featuring the logo of the vendor, their email address, and their Twitter handle. Below that, it shows the amount and the exact time of purchase. And below that is a Google Map of where the transaction was made and your signature.

It’s been about three years since I excepted credit cards. The last device I used was pogo through provident bank. Which did not work out at all. The Device made an error and it was fixed but I lost $700 in the process due to processing fees but they refused to refund me. The problem is there’s too many hands involved and they have you on the phone going in circles. The evil leader being First Data they just kept eating money out of my account and I was helpless and could not stop it. So This left me with a very bad taste in my mouth. But after working for a few years I started to lose customers because I did not except credit card so I decided if square a chance. And I started taking credit cards. I have processed roughly $11,000 in three days for deposits on jobs and some payments. I was watching my account getting ready for to be deposited. After three days nothing. Did not realize that square tried to contact me because of the large amount of transactions and they put a hold on my account. I thought to myself here we go again. They requested a list of documents and proof of identity. I thought it would take weeks for them to process it. 12 o’clock the next day they processed it and released the funds. That impressed me. And ever since it has been great. Money is quick about 12-24 hours. So give them a shot. They deserve it.

If you’re thinking of using Square as the point of sale software for you business, you may notice there are two main ways to set up Square: with an external card reader (like the standard headphone jack reader or the NFC payment reader), or in the Square Stand, which has an integrated card reader. Deciding between using Square with an external card reader (which we’ll refer to as Square with a reader) and the Square Stand really comes down to your device and the hardware you want to use. In this article, we’ll go over the benefits and drawbacks of using the Square Stand and help you decide if it’s best for your business.

As we mentioned, the biggest difference between using Square with a reader and the Square Stand is hardware compatibility, which mainly includes using receipt printers and barcode scanners. This can also include cash drawers, but they generally connect to your device via receipt printer. If you’d like to use a cash drawer, see our note on cash drawers below. If you’re not planning on using any hardware at all with Square, the Square Stand isn’t really necessary and you may want to consider a cheaper stand (more on that below).

Within both apps, you can add or change items in your inventory. Entering item information is straightforward, and you can edit item name, cost, barcode or SKU, tax, and more. Both apps allow you to add and sort items into categories (such as “Drinks”, “Desserts”, or “Sandwiches”). They both offer the option to add item variations to products (such as different sizes or colors), as well as add modifiers to products, such as different condiments, flavors, etc. These item modifiers and variations can be used in a variety of ways. For instance, if you sell coffee, you can set up variations for each size of coffee you offer and modifiers for add-ons to the coffee, such as add soy milk or vanilla flavor. Below is an example of the same transaction in Square and PayPal Here, with multiple variations and product modifiers (click images to expand).

These printers aesthetically match up really well with a mobile type of set up. So if you’re using an iPad, a Surface tablet, you have a small stand and you’re using a very compact set-up with a very small cash drawer, then these are kind of designed to meet that look, and are very space-saving. The LED lights are also changed from like a traditional green to being a glowing blue, so much more modern looking receipt printers than you see traditionally. Interface-wise, these both have USB. They’re also available with Bluetooth or Ethernet, and then NFC is also in an available connection, at least coming soon to them.

Connecting your Square system using iPad(s) on a LAN is ideal for larger retail businesses and restaurants. Using a LAN allows you to share printers such as kitchen and order fullfilment printers that can be shared between multiple iPads running Square. Square iPads on a LAN use Ethernet (LAN) and Bluetooth printers and scanners. Cash drawers are connected directly to a receipt printer.
