A second thing to keep in mind is the Square Stand is not exclusively compatible with USB hardware; it’s also compatible with all of the same wireless hardware as Square with a reader. If you’re interested in using the Square Stand and also want wireless hardware, either to future-proof your business or for more mobility, that’s an option you can consider (although the Square Stand may be a bit excessive, see below for other stand options). This also means you can add on wireless hardware to your Square Stand in addition to your USB hardware, like an Ethernet kitchen printer or Bluetooth barcode scanner.
Square offers an open ticket option, which allows you to start a transaction and put it on hold while you ring up other transactions. These open tickets are accessible across all synced devices, making Square more friendly to restaurants and bars, where open tickets may be necessary (as well as accessible across multiple devices). Square can also do split tender payments. PayPal Here does not have the option to keep open tickets or split tender payments.
For anyone starting any kind of business that involves the exchange of payments, cash registers equipped with cash drawers and inserts are a necessity. Whether it be a restaurant, a retail store, a kiosk,…
POS printers and accessories allow you to enhance the functionality of your existing point-of-sale hardware. These devices add the ability to display pricing to your customers or create a printed receipt for each transaction. This promotes solid customer service experiences.
Its not too terrible typing in SKUs or looking up items in Square’s super slick interface, but lets face it, its always easier to just scan things in. Plus, you get to hold a laser gun and hear that little beep when it does its thing, very cool. And if the thought of having a laser gun wasn’t cool enough, the barcode is also super easy to integrate right into the system. Just like the cash register and printer, you just plug it right into the USB hub and you’re ready to go. You’ll be scanning away in no time.
The following hardware accessories are compatible with Square Stand. All hardware connecting directly to the Square Stand but will connect to the stand via USB. Note that with Square Stand you can use either a cash drawer that plugs into the receipt printer or one that plugs into the USB block of the Square Stand. We recommend using the printer connection since the printer connected cash drawer is simpler and less expensive than the USB version.
This price comparison includes the most basic official hardware available for each option. There are other, more expensive hardware options available, see our in-depth reader and Square Stand guides for more hardware options.
If your business has physical storefront, and especially if it’s a food-service business or a business with multiple locations, we recommend Square. Square has more features than PayPal Here, and while some of these may be excessive for very small businesses, many are useful and fill in gaps where PayPal Here is lacking. Features such as inventory management and stock tracking, multiple location features, and open or split tickets make Square stand out above PayPal Here. A downside to Square is the employee features are not standard, and require a $5 monthly subscription (per employee).
According to Square’s Help Center, the iPad version of their app supports many Star Micronics printers. In order to work, these printers must be plugged into a wireless router via Ethernet cable that is accessible to the iPad. Visit Square’s Help Center and search for “print receipts” to learn more.
To begin, we have been using Square for almost 4 years. Over that time we have integrated square more and more into our business. We are happy to report that this has been a great decision. The app is always being updated and keeps getting the features that we ask for. All you have to do is email or call and tell their customer service department what features you really want to see in the future. Then sure enough in a month or two the very thing you asked for is added in or has some beginning resemblance of what you had asked for. Do not be deterred by the negative reviews. Most of them are people who have decided that the review section for the app is the best wY to ask a question to the support staff. Or they may be engaged in some kind of shady business that is prohibited by square.
A secure counter clip is provided along with an optional 3rd party Kensington lock facility for maximum security. The optional under-counter mount kit option enables the mPOP to be positioned in a more secure environment if required.
Supported Bluetooth receipt printers are ideal for iPad receipt printing on the go or in casual environments where you don’t have access to an Ethernet port. The following Bluetooth printers are compatible with the Square Register app on the iPad:
You may plug a receipt printer into one of the three USB ports found on the Square Stand accessories hub, but kitchen printers are typically located some distance away from your checkout register – farther away than a USB cable will reach.
This staples is consistently a disaster. The printers never print my documents on the first attempt, to which I then have to re-print and then wait in line again to receive a refund. I feel bad for the associates because they are apologizing for technological malfunctions that they don’t have much control over. One associate, Vincent, was really helpful today. I hope he is getting compensated well for his efforts.
Before connecting your Bluetooth receipt printer to your iPad, ensure the battery is charged and the device is connected to an AC outlet, receipt paper is loaded, and the printer has been turned on. For further information on the initial setup of the printer, refer to the corresponding manufacturer’s manual: Star Micronics SM-S220i and Star Micronics SM-T300i.
I don’t like that I can’t view another store’s inventory from the app. Very often, I find myself saying, “We don’t have that in-stock here, but I know it’s in-stock at our other location.” It’d be very helpful to be able to type in an item and view quantity in-stock for all locations. I also HATE that there are not “tickets” available anymore. I own a music store that offers instrument repairs and we also have special orders. For instrument repairs – the amount is variable depending on what needs done and I also notate the transaction with the instrument type, brand, serial number – what parts were used, and what was done under the “Quantity and Notes” section. I don’t want to have to look up that information and type into a transaction with the customer standing at the register. In the other app, I could do all of that when no one was in the store and save it as a ticket. Then when they come into the store, all I had to do was pull up the ticket and they were good to go. Same with special orders. I don’t want to add inventory into Square, assign it a price, add the SKU, put it into a category, set the quantity, etc., if I’m not going to STOCK the item. So for special orders, I like to just type in the information under “Custom Amount,” but I do like to notate the transaction under “Quantity and Notes” with the title and SKU so I can look back and see what it was. I don’t want to do that typing when a customer arrives, so I prefer to save it as a ticket. Now I can’t do that.
My account was deactivated for something that I was wrongfully accused of doing. Someone filled a dispute saying they didn’t authorize the $200 transaction (2 months after the transaction) square TOOK $200 from my bank account and closed my account (that was only my second dispute in 2 years with them and the first dispute was settled in my favor). Here we are almost 4 months later after I started using another site for my business, and finally I get an email that says “the $200 dispute was decided in your favor” I thought… well finally. Makes sense because the idiot that did the dispute lives across country but claimed they never even made the payment (like how the heck could I make a payment on behalf of you when the invoice was sent to your email) but anyway they decided in my favor… YAY I GET MY $200 back! NOPE… WRONG… SORRY NOT TODAY… square then tells me I have to wait another minimum of 90- maximum of 180 days for the money to go back in my account!!! IM SOOO P*SSED OFF!!!! So there is literally $200 sitting in a square account no longer active and I just have to wait another 100+ days! Not happening. I contacted BBB and will be posting on every social media out there. They have the WORST customer service ever. If you even get the LEAST bit aggravated on a call with them, they just hang up.. DO NOT, I REPEAT DOOOOOONOOOOOOTTTT DEAL WITH THESE PEOPLE
Square systems are primarily compatible with Ethernet or Bluetooth interface printers (depending on the tablet you are using, Android tablets with USB ports and USB On-The-Go or USB Host mode can use USB interface printers). The compatible printers for Square systems are as follows:

None of the printers we looked at used ink. The printers use thermal paper. In other words, the paper is heated by the printer to print the customer’s order on the receipt. There are color printers but we don’t think you need this. Most people throw their receipts away or tuck them out of sight. So there’s really no reason to spend the extra money on a color printer.

I know that the Square corporate line is that the APG Vasario VB554A-BL1616 is the only USB cash drawer that works with the Square Stand hub (which means you don’t need a printer, which is what I want). I am wondering if anyone has experience using a different, less expensive USB drawer with the Square Stand and USB hub?

I suggest that Square makes available some advice or a list of cheaper Bluetooth printers that customers could consider. Also, please make the printing of receipts from the Square customer web site easier.
I own a deli and this system has been amazing! I set it up myself and I’m not tech savvy at all… Not just that but all the girls and I learned to use it the first hour. Very simply, straight to the point and does everything you need!
Be sure the printer and the iPad are connected to the same network. To confirm this or change your Wi-Fi network, go to the iPad’s Settings and tap “Wi-Fi” located in the left sidebar. Then select the network that the router is broadcasting and click “Connect”.
