Square Point of Sale on an iPad is compatible with a wide variety of third-party hardware accessories. Below, you’ll find a list of supported accessories, where to purchase them, and information on getting set up.
If you want a small and easy to carry receipt printer, this may be it. It weighs less than half a pound. It is easy to carry around. For people who sell at craft shows, farmers markets and historical fairs this may be the receipt printer.
If you purchase this service plan and eligible product for this service plan, you acknowledge that Amazon may send the service plan seller relevant product and price information for the purpose of administering the plan
As a bluetooth only device, it is a bit glitchy. If you are wanting to use it with a phone/tablet only as a standalone device, look elsewhere. The miura m010 reader works great for this, though is unfortunately not available on amazon.
If you are buying this for the Amazon Local Register payment platform, be sure to get the Ethernet version (not the USB version). This one only connects to your network and not directly to a computer.
Hi @McNabbGames — I went ahead and combined your thread with another seller’s who had a similar question. I can assure you that we’re always looking into more affordable hardware options for our sellers. As for the technical explanation, from my limited understanding (I’m not an engineer), each printer manufacturer has a specific driver for their hardware, and since manufacturers don’t build printer drivers for Square Register, we would have to build one for each printer model – which is something we don’t have the bandwidth to do.

The new Square Contactless and Chip Reader is included so you can accept every way your customers want to pay. Place the reader in the dock, connect the dock to the USB hub, and you’re ready for business. Accept magstripe cards, chip cards, and NFC payments like Apple Pay.
I don’t have any personal use of this but this item says it takes usb input and converts it to the connection that would come out of the printer from what I understand. It may work, it may not. There are no reviews that are helpful of the product.
I’m a software engineering intern at Square and have been working on Bluetooth printer support for iPad. This feature was released in our latest Square Register build and brings physical receipt printing using Star printers to a mobile customer base. Before this version, Register for iPad supported printed receipts through Star printers connected by WiFi and USB. Adding support for a new type of printer was a great choice for an intern project as it was a combination of building off of an existing hardware integration layer and extending it to support new concurrency requirements. Integrating this new feature into Square’s codebase was a great lesson of how a well-designed code base can make writing new code easier.
First one we got was dead. Customer service is almost non-existent. Packaged it up and paid to ship back to repair center. Several weeks went by with no feedback, then received back the exact packaging with no note or anything to indicate what the issue was, or if it had even been fixed. It seems it has, but that process was a pain. Now it doesn’t like to stay visible on the network so we are always either re-booting or just telling people it’s broken. Turns out people don’t care all that much about paper receipts anyway. Recommend purchasing directly through Square if you really need it. At least then you might get some tech support.
Pay Pal says this is compatible, but the few reps I have spoken with are not really familiar enough to guide me through. My LG Optimus phone runs T-Mobile 4g. I connected stand alone router(LAN?) to printer. I am guessing there is a conflict and I need to disconnect 4g or whatever wifi is connected to phone in order to pick-up signal from LAN router, assuming I can’t receive two simultaneous signals. That would disconnect me from Pay Pal transaction. Don’t know what I missing, but so far it’s a lot of wasted time and money. There’s no customer service that I can find with printer and the user guide is scant. I’ll take another look at Star website, but don’t expect to find a solution there. A USB connection would have likely prevented many issues/
As VanKalkerFarms answer states, Point of Sale is not compatible with standard desktop printers at this time. A possible solution might be to view your receipts on your online Dashboard after the transaction is complete and you can print them from there on a desktop printer.
If you are using your iPad or iPhone by itself with the Square app, you will not be able to use a USB Star Micronics Printer. You will need either a Bluetooth Receipt Printer, or Ethernet Receipt Printer. A good reason for going with Ethernet, is that you can have multiple devices print to one printer. If you are using an Android device, you can use either an Ethernet Receipt Printer, or and of the USB Receipt Printer stated above as long as you use the USB OTG(on the go) adapter. Please note, Bluetooth is not currently supported on Android for Square.

Had 3 of these in my place to on cash draws one in the kitchen they work well as long as there is no internet/WiFi drop off. Using it with couple IPad Airs and Square register app for several years. When I loose internet or sometimes they seem to disconnect from the register even when I don’t have internet problems and they usually have to powered off and on. Also in the mean time my cash draw wont open and I have to find the key. Being so annoyed I with connection issues I have since replaced them with the USB versions (except the kitchen one) and all my problems stopped.
Star Micronics TSP100GT Fast, reliable thermal printing is a snap with the Star Micronics TSP100GT. This printer offers additional configuraiton, including embedded graphics and logos, adding flair to retail receipts. The TSP100GT supports iPhones as well, giving you an option for receipt printing with your mobile POS installation.

Great product and great company to work with. I at first ordered the TSP143U which is a USB Printer to work with a Tablet to set up a POS system at my business. Once I got it, I realized that if I had the printer plugged into the tablet there was no additional port to then charge the tablet. I contacted the company and they gladly accepted my return and let me reorder this LAN Printer. I highly recommend this vendor and their product.
I spent years in jobs that included lots of cash handling. This cash drawer is the nicest I’ve seen. It’s solid build will last for years and its finish is just lovely. It triggers cleanly and the drawer all but shoots out when triggered. I’m very pleased.
Here is more information.
I started off the implementation of Bluetooth printer support by using the same concurrency model used by our WiFi printer code and running Bluetooth printing and printer discovery blocks on a global concurrent queue. I quickly found what appeared to be a non-deterministic bug — sometimes I could print a receipt with no problem, and other times it would fail part way through. What I was in fact encountering was a timer firing and searching for connected printers while the app was in the middle of sending data to a printer. While this behavior was perfectly acceptable in communication for WiFi printers (TCP supports multiple simultaneous connections), it totally broke down in the new communication channel. It became clear that some kind of mutual exclusion was necessary to prevent this kind of collision.
We really like the Apple MFi certification with the auto connect feature. We also like the small footprint of this receipt printer. Overall this is one easy and fast printer to setup. The Apple MFi makes it real easy. You just turn the printer on within range of your iPad.
You can use any of our Square Compatible Receipt Printers with the Square Stand Hardware, this setup has the most options to choose from. It just depends how you want to connect to the Square Stand and how many stations you have. If you are connecting straight to the Square Stand via the USB hub, or with Bluetooth we offer the following Thermal Printers for printing Credit Card Receipts :
Send invoices free from your Square Point of Sale and get paid faster. Customize your invoices, set up weekly or monthly recurring invoices from your Dashboard, and let customers pay online with a credit or debit card. Invoices are free to send and cost 2.9% + 30¢ per invoice paid online.
This printer is fast. Thermal printers print very fast, and the internals are actually much simpler than the ones at my work. You simply open it up, drop the paper inside (yes, it’s a drop in, which makes it much easier to replace the roll once it has run out) and then feed the paper over the top.
Please note, these printers can only be used with iOS devices at this time. I don’t have a timeline for when they’ll be supported with Android devices yet. But I’ll report back when I have an update! 😀
Impact printers only print order tickets for a kitchen. They’re not affected by heat and can withstand warm environments. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal, receipt printer paper.
Did you just purchase a Square Stand or have the Square Register app running on your Android, iPhone or Tablet and need a Receipt Printer or Cash Drawer Hardware Bundle? There are a few different models and options for you to choose from when selecting a Thermal or Impact Receipt Printer and we will go over these here. We will cover other popular POS apps like Shopify, Breadcrumb, Shopkeep, PayPal Here and Clover in upcoming articles.
First and foremost, a little background info: I own my own business and have been using the Square Register POS system for over four years. I have a different kit, but they’re all similar products. When my friends decided to open their restaurant, they went with an old school cash register and struggled at the end of the night with keeping track of taxes because it was not as intuitive to use. I convinced them to order this kit from Amazon and the other necessary items elsewhere and helped them set everything up in less than 30 minutes. This kit provided an excellent, trusted printer and an easy to connect cash drawer. Upon arrival, I had an issue with the cash drawer – it would not open. A quick email (on a Sunday) to the seller, and he gave me advice and a link to an explanation as to how to fix the stuck drawer. Using his explanation took me a couple of minutes to fix it. I am a realistic person, and I understand that things don’t always go as planned, so I was happy the seller worked with me fast to come to a solution. I gave this five stars because of the customer service – you can find similar products elsewhere and they all work the same way… but the customer service provided made this an excellent purchase! Thanks EOM-POS!

*Note: We have had some Sellers complain about the receipts printing over too many pages when they want it to only print on one. The trick is to reduce the scale of the image within your printing options until it fits. (see screenshot)
I know that the Square corporate line is that the APG Vasario VB554A-BL1616 is the only USB cash drawer that works with the Square Stand hub (which means you don’t need a printer, which is what I want). I am wondering if anyone has experience using a different, less expensive USB drawer with the Square Stand and USB hub?

This printer is terrible. It always has connectivity issues and it is constantly jamming. Worst mistake i made for my business. We have to keep it off until we get a customer otherwise it keeps printing no host receipts and it jams. Called star micronics they said it was probably an issue on my end. WRONG! MY other register, which is hooked up by same switch board, has an Epson printer and it gives no issues. Do not buy this printer for your business. Go with an Epson. Same amount of $, no problems.

The Ethernet printers compatible with Square Point of Sale are thermal printers. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal receipt paper. These types of printers aren’t ideal for kitchens or high-temperature working areas.
Generally speaking, the Star printers will just show TSP100 on the front of the actual printer but those are the model numbers; it is kind of confusing. Feel free to share a link or two to the printers you’re viewing, I’d be happy to confirm.

A printer-driven cash drawer must be connected to an receipt printer to open automatically. Otherwise you’ll need to manually open the drawer using the cash drawer key. A USB cash drawer (requires Square Stand) will open automatically when connected.
The Star Micronics SM-S230i is light weight at only 7.7 ounces. It is small and easy to carry around. If you’re someone who sell at a farmers market, craft fair or some other place where mobility is very important, the Star Micronics SM-S230i may be what you need. It uses thermal paper and connects to your iPhone, iPad with bluetooth or USB. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SM-S230i.

Connect your Square Stand with a compatible iPad and recommended hardware accessories to help run your business. Before purchasing a Square Stand, make sure you’re using a supported iPad. You can identify your iPad model on Apple’s Support site.
My first inclination, having just taken a class in C++ using pthreads, was to simply use locks. I created a shared NSLock through a class method and locked before listening and printing, as described in Apple’s Threading Programming Guide. I was excited when it accomplished the mutual exclusion I wanted, but my coworkers were less thrilled about using such a low-level solution given the higher level abstractions available in iOS. In search of a higher-level solution, I replaced the global concurrent queue on which I was running the printer code with a serial dispatch queue, allowing only one block to be run at once. I was getting warmer, but my new solution still raised some concerns.
This is one of the more common receipt printers used with Square Payments. It generally costs less than $200. It come in white and black color. It has an auto-cutter to slice receipt paper for you. It uses thermal paper so you never never need to fill it with ink. It is generally easy to maintain and add paper when you need it. So this is a printer that works well in a wide variety of environments. However, if you are in a kitchen or some area where the air is moist you may want to get an impact printer as thermal paper does not work well in moist environments where there is little ventilation. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SM-S230i.
Be sure the printer and the iPad are connected to the same network. To confirm this or change your Wi-Fi network, go to the iPad’s Settings and tap “Wi-Fi” located in the left sidebar. Then select the network that the router is broadcasting and click “Connect”.

Receipt Printer Compatible With Square, A cash drawer needs to be linked to an invoice printer to open immediately. Otherwise, you’ll have to buy hand open the drawer utilizing the money drawer secret. * This standard money drawer is not able to link to an invoice printer.
Effect printers just print order tickets for a cooking area. They’re not impacted by heat and can stand up to warm environments. They need heat-sensitive paper and will not deal with non-thermal, invoice printer paper.
If you need a remote Kitchen Impact Order Printer, the Star SP742ML or SP742ME will work for all applications. It is a Dot Matrix Receipt Printer and uses a ribbon, so you can print on carbon copy paper rolls, or standard single ply :
