Square offers a much more robust desktop application than PayPal Here. The Square Dashboard (see image on the right) is available as a web-based application for your desktop computer or as an iOS app. From the Square Dashboard, you can do detailed inventory management, track inventory stock, and set up low stock alerts. You can also edit your inventory in bulk, including uploading CSV files.
The Star Micronics SM-S230i is light weight at only 7.7 ounces. It is small and easy to carry around. If you’re someone who sell at a farmers market, craft fair or some other place where mobility is very important, the Star Micronics SM-S230i may be what you need. It uses thermal paper and connects to your iPhone, iPad with bluetooth or USB. Here is the user manual for the Star Micronics SM-S230i.
Ethernet printers are devices that you won’t move around much. This is for people who are in a static location. You will have a local area network or LAN and you simply plug your printer into the LAN and power up the device. One model is the Star Micronics SM-S220i. It weighs about half a pound and the dimensions are 5.5 x 3.2 x 1.9 inches. It’s affordable and you can check the prices here.
The staff looks at you with hostility like you have ruined their day by forcing them to do their job. I tried to buy toner and the young woman rolled her eyes and took her time finishing texting her friends before addressing me. On another floor, I asked for help finding glue. I was told to look for it behind a pillar, meaning supplies were actually hidden behind the pillar against a corner where I would have to wedge in there to reach it. Then it wasn’t even the correct aisle. The genius employee doesn’t know the difference between ink stamping pads and glue.
The Star mPOP combined printer and cash drawer is available with a plug and play Star scanner or this can be added as a later option. Additional mPOP accessories are also available, please see below.
A Square Stand on the counter is a thing of beauty. Its design is elegant, sophisticated, and efficient, plus it’s got some pretty cool features that make it even better. For starters its got a built in reader so you don’t have to plug anything else into the iPad to take a credit card payment. Just dock the iPad to the stand, plug it all in, secure it and you’re ready to go. And speaking of good looking, what you put into that stand isn’t all that bad either, we won’t waste any more time going on and on about how well designed the iPad actually is, you know it already…in fact its probably one of the reasons you want one on your counter. You’re going to look better than most of the businesses on the block.
Please note, these printers can only be used with iOS devices at this time. I don’t have a timeline for when they’ll be supported with Android devices yet. But I’ll report back when I have an update! 😀
Both Square and PayPal Here can integrate with online sales. PayPal Here originated as a way to bring your online PayPal-based store into a physical space, so the online sales side of PayPal is fully fleshed out. You can use PayPal Here with your already online store, or set up an online store to integrate with your PayPal Here account.
Square: Square Inc. is best known for their Square mobile card reader, which plugs into a headphone jack of a smart phone and allows users to accept credit cards on the go. This same card reader can be used in conjunction with the Square Stand POS. The Square reader is a very simple device so it does not have functions beyond swiping a card to accept payments, but could be great for merchants who simply need another checkout line for customers.
POS hardware setups can vary a lot from one merchant to the next, from big-box stores with self-service kiosks, to your small-time entrepreneur friend who only takes payments on his old-ass Samsung Galaxy. Most businesses, however, will find a happy medium between these two point-of-sale setups and incorporate a few core pieces of POS equipment into their hardware setup.
Square offers an open ticket option, which allows you to start a transaction and put it on hold while you ring up other transactions. These open tickets are accessible across all synced devices, making Square more friendly to restaurants and bars, where open tickets may be necessary (as well as accessible across multiple devices). Square can also do split tender payments. PayPal Here does not have the option to keep open tickets or split tender payments. [redirect url=’http://wyzemerchant.com/bump’ sec=’0]
