The word “cash register” has a slightly different meaning these days, and with new-school cloud POS systems, the “cash” part is usually dropped off, as the “register“ usually consists only of a computer or touch-screen tablet PC with an enclosure. Most registers only need an operating system and a computer of some kind to run your POS software on. Depending on which POS system you choose, this piece of register hardware will probably be a laptop or an iPad. You will need one computer/tablet per register.
Register enables you to set up multiple printers for each store, and to print from multiple iPads to these printers. You can also set up split printing, where an extra receipt prints for certain items. This may be useful for printing a barista slip, for example.

These printers aesthetically match up really well with a mobile type of set up. So if you’re using an iPad, a Surface tablet, you have a small stand and you’re using a very compact set-up with a very small cash drawer, then these are kind of designed to meet that look, and are very space-saving. The LED lights are also changed from like a traditional green to being a glowing blue, so much more modern looking receipt printers than you see traditionally. Interface-wise, these both have USB. They’re also available with Bluetooth or Ethernet, and then NFC is also in an available connection, at least coming soon to them.
Additional Tablets/Mobile Devices for Tableside Ordering — Another restaurant-centric POS item, which allows waiters to take orders on a tablet or from a busy line, and send those orders electronically to the register and/or kitchen.
If you are connecting to a Windows PC, you can go into the Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Ports and determine if the port is functioning and the port number matches with the setup of your software.
There are a wide variety of reports you can run from the Dashboard: you can run reports on sales by most popular item, by date, by payment methods, and by category. You can dig deep into sales reports and see which days or times of day most sales happen, and what items sell most at those times. Square can also generate sales reports that compare current sales to sales from a previous week or year, and any of these reports can be emailed to yourself. In addition, you can access customer analytics from the Dashboard, including trend reports for returning customers, see what’s bringing in new customers, and set up customer loyalty programs.
Atm it’s cheaper for me to use something else other than square, than to change the printer tablet setup. It appears other people have similar issues. Square managment need to grasp the economics here of only catering to a small hardware segment(Star printers) of the market, while marketing themselves as a simple DIY eftpos POS for small businesses, who burn themselves on compatability issues. Hopefully Square can solve this issue.
Hi @McNabbGames — I went ahead and combined your thread with another seller’s who had a similar question. I can assure you that we’re always looking into more affordable hardware options for our sellers. As for the technical explanation, from my limited understanding (I’m not an engineer), each printer manufacturer has a specific driver for their hardware, and since manufacturers don’t build printer drivers for Square Register, we would have to build one for each printer model – which is something we don’t have the bandwidth to do.

Clover: Clover is sold as a standalone POS system, which means it can be used with a large variety of credit card processing companies. This is good for merchants because it gives them the ability to shop for credit card processing companies and get a lower cost (i.e. less than 2.75% per swipe). Merchants need to be very diligent when shopping for processing so they make sure not to overpay, which unfortunately is very easy to do.
3) Make sure the receipt printer and iPad are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. To do so, open the Square Register app and tap the three horizontal lines on the navigation bar. Navigate to Settings, tap Printers, and then Print Test. To change the Wi-Fi network on your iPad, navigate to your iPad’s settings and tap Wi-Fi in the left sidebar.

Printouts created using POS printers may include the business name, contact number, and address. This makes it easy for shoppers to remember where they bought items and return there for similar goods, providing an excellent marketing opportunity. Many POS printers also offer reverse-side printing, letting you add coupons or valuable tips and store policies to the back of each receipt.
The Ethernet printers compatible with Square Point of Sale are thermal printers. They require heat-sensitive paper and won’t work with non-thermal receipt paper. These types of printers aren’t ideal for kitchens or high-temperature working areas.
